Narcissist? Selfless or selfish?

In celebration of my 20th birthday this month a friend of mine sent me this post on Instagram.

This post led us to have a discussion over what it is really like to be selfish which led me to the realization that I absolutely LOVE talking about myself, I could go on and on for hours without getting bored, feel a little sad for the person who’s ear I’m biting off but it’s true, I love talking about my life and call me selfish but  I always try and see how a situation is going to benefit me first. I guess we all are Narcissistic to some extent.

People nowadays like to categorize others into these categories you can either be Narcissistic, Selfish, or Selfless or of course a mixture of all.

Meaning of these words in modern-day:

Narcissistic: You’re self-obsessed and too full of yourself

Selfish: You only ever think about yourself and don’t consider the consequences on your friends and family.

Selfless: You’re too forgiving and helpful, easy to take advantage of.

At different points in my life, I’ve been called all three.  The only thing I get out of these 3 meanings is that too much of anything isn’t good and I believe that each and every person is Narcistic, selfless, and selfish to some extent, and until all three of them are maintained to a healthy level I don’t think there is any cause to judge a person for wanting the best for themselves and their loved ones. People have started to depict these words with such negative connotations that nobody would want to be called any of these but is being called these names really that bad?

I say it’s good to be a little narcissistic because, as said by Oscar Wilde “To love oneself is the beginning of a life-long romance.”

It’s good to be a little Selfish that way you know you’re always going to have your own back.

And of course,

“Only those who have learned the power of sincere and selfless contribution experience life’s deepest joy: true fulfillment.” Tony Robbins

Don’t let someone else decide your character, only you know your reasons behind making a decision and you are not answerable to anyone else for your choices.
