People usually think having it all figured out means knowing what you’re going to be doing 5-10 years down the line, having it all planned out, and everything. I am a very strong believer in setting goals and working towards them, but I think figuring it out has a bigger meaning. It means even if I’m in my 40’s and I decide I want to learn french and travel through Europe for 6 months, it’s okay, it’s dropping your major after 2 long years of studying them, it’s learning something new and realizing, DAMN why haven’t I done this before?
If 2020 has taught me anything it’s this, you can figure out all the plans you want in your life, You can have it all laid out in front of you but that’s only a picture of what you want, not what the world has in store for you. I have always had crazy things on my bucket list like experiencing an earthquake, a hijacked aircraft, I want to get a taste of war tourism and even with so many crazy ideas not once did I ever think I’d be a part of a pandemic.
Throughout your lifespan, you are going to be trying so many new things that you’ll often end up doing something very different than what you initially pictured and THAT’S OKAY! Change tends to irk most people because that’s what we’re taught, to not be comfortable with change.
We need to normalize switching specialties and career paths, trying new things in our 50’s, exploring the world, finding ourselves, getting remarried at 80, it’s each one’s choice and you do not get to judge them for it. The biggest problem people claim to have these days is “There are too many options”!!!! But is that really a drawback? If anything you’re probably running out of time with all the different things you want to do. Okay, now I can practically hear some of you say “RAJVI! It’s not that easy, you gotta commit to something to earn!?” well I read this quote that says “Find yourself 3 hobbies:
One to make you Money,
One to keep you fit,
And
One to keep you creative.” I couldn’t agree more!!
With so many options in the world don’t restrict yourself from trying new things, take advantage of the opportunities you get. You’re never sure about which ice cream you’re going to have until you taste some flavors that sound interesting to you, just like that you’re not going to truly figure yourself out until you try out what the world has to offer you.
